Emergency WASH Support for disaster/conflict-affected people in Somalia project is a project implemented by Centre for Research and Integrated Development CeRID and funded Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway (MFA) through Norwegian Church Aid (NCA).
The overall goal of the project is to “save lives, alleviate suffering and protect human dignity” by providing communities affected by crisis access to life-saving WASH services appropriate and relevant to their immediate needs. In particular, the project aims that Women, girls, men, and boys have improved hygiene practices and access to hygiene items to protect against public and personal health risks as women, girls, men, and boys access a safe, equitable, and sustainable quantity of water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene (Sphere)
The project targets in Luuq District of the Gedo Region borders Ethiopia to the North and is close to Kenya and with an estimated population of 90,000 people. During the 2022 period, the project has reached 7,593 women, girls, boys, and men beneficiaries for various activities. Households were selected based on the CeRID vulnerability criteria, which were refined based on consultations with respective communities. Households were identified and selected for assistance based on needs that conform to the agreed targeting criteria which include socioeconomic Status: Livelihood-related factors, Situational Status, population groups, and demographic characteristics, Households with Protection Needs: Protection-related characteristics, e.g. GBV referral, Households headed by single women. Households hosting unaccompanied or separated or orphaned children and Households where members have a disability or a chronic disease.
The project reaches annually an average of 7593 people with different activities most notably access to appropriate hygiene supplies and WASH facilities safe, equitable, and sustainable quantity of water for drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene, and access to safe, appropriate, and hygienic sanitation services.
