Centre for Research and Integrated Development (https://www.cerid.so) is a non-governmental, non-profit organization founded and became operational in 2005 and a fully-fledged institution in 2010. CeRID is governed by the Board of Directors, who are responsible for policy level, and the Executive team, who are responsible for the program and operational management of the organization. CeRID’s institutional focus is grounded on five Strategic Priority Goals:
- Research on issues affecting lives and livelihoods, including climate change, resilience, food security, education, peace, security and development and the productive sector. CeRID specializes in community capacity building.
- Reversing the impact of climate change through climate adaptation programs and robust support systems on livelihoods and resilience building. Promoting afforestation through large-scale seedlings production. Promoting climate-smart agriculture practices and climate change adaptation through research, the introduction of agriculture value chain to reduce food insecurity and enhance resilience building in the Horn of Africa.
- Contributing to the effort to eradicate poverty, promoting equitable economic and social development, human rights, productivity and income through knowledge and skill development.
- Contributing to the effort to alleviate immediate human suffering and strengthen the resilience and self-recovery capacity of drought and conflict-affected communities, including IDPs and host communities.
- Advancing and building strategic partnerships with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) partners to achieve meaningful impact on climate adaptation, social, economic, and environmental development in support of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, and 2050 Climate Neutral (Net Zero) Agenda.
CeRID affiliates on research include SaMTEC (https://samtec.so/) and Valleyseed (https://valleyseedenterprise.com/), a leading Technical and Vocational Education (TVET) institution in Somalia, accredited by the Ministry of Education Culture and Higher Education of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and an offset enterprise of CeRID and SaMTEC accredited by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation which focuses on plant breeding, seeds production, bulking and overall seeds and agriculture value chain respectively.
From its inception, CeRID has been well positioned in research, implementing development and humanitarian programs, and supporting community capacity building, climate change mitigation and adaptation, peace and dialogue, and gender equity. Several successful research studies that CeRID has conducted or planned to implement are:
- Impact of climate change on food security in Somalia (in discussion, NBS-Somalia)
- Cross border Community Resilience (2022, Chemonics/BHA) -HOA – Started.
- Seeds Value Chain and Business Model Study (2022, Swiss Development Cooperation) – HOA – On completion.
- Conflict Analysis of Mandera Triangle (2016/2017, Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia, IGAD-CEWARN) -HOA – Completed.
- Support to Crop Pest Surveillance Management (2016, FAO) – Somalia – Completed.
- Value Chain Analysis for the Sustainable Horticultural and Agricultural Value Chain Development for Recovery and Economic Progress (2016, NCA, ASEP) – Completed.
